Ed Balls says Labour Party has no hope of winning under Jeremy Corbyn

The former shadow chancellor turned Strictly star said the party as it stands will 'never get elected again'

LABOUR’S Ed Balls admitted last night his party could never see power again following Jeremy Corbyn’s reelection as leader.

The former Shadow Chancellor said he hoped the loss of a general election under Mr Corbyn would “refocus” Labour minds.

But speaking on ITV’s The Agenda, he warned: “It may be that Labour, as it stands, is never going to be elected again.”

The former politician, now performing on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing said the Labour leader and his Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell must get out and engage with voters and moderate MPs in the parliamentary Labour Party.

He added: “People are going to have to stand back and say ‘in the end, do you really think trying to win from the hard left is going to work in Britain?’

"I think there’s no chance, but the Labour Party may have to go along this journey, and as a consequence we have a Conservative government which can get away with a great deal, without any proper opposition, and I think it’s bad for the public interests and for the country.”

Jeremy Corbyn was reelected as the Labour leader on Saturday after a decisive 62% win over rival Owen Smith.

The Party is currently holding its four-day annual Party Conference which ends on Wednesday.
