He was forced to undergo hours of emergency surgery to remove the blade after it left him just millimetres from death.

The horror unfolded in Shildon, County Durham, on Halloween last year after a fight erupted.

Thomas Brazell stabbed the victim with a kitchen knife but the handle broke off - leaving the blade through the man's throat.

Police released the picture of the grim X-ray as the 28-year-old was jailed for seven years and two months.

He pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon at Newcastle Crown Court.

Detective Constable Sunil Weerasinghe, of Durham Constabulary, said: “This man is incredibly lucky to be alive, although he will suffer the consequences of the attack for the rest of his life.

“As we have seen here, knife crime has such devastating consequences for not just the victim, but everyone involved.

“We will always take robust action against those who choose to carry knives and use them to harm others.
