'brexit was cameron's fault'

Brexit was caused by David Cameron running a ‘s**t campaign’ according to a top German official

Günther Oettinger said Brussels would have to face up to the consequences of the UK’s historic vote to leave the EU

BREXIT was caused by David Cameron running a “s**t campaign”, according to Germany’s European commissioner.

Guenther Oettinger, the telecoms and IT commissioner, said Brussels would now have to face up to the consequences of the UK’s historic vote to leave the European Union.

Speaking to a meeting of the European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association he said: “We have to accept the democratic decision and the s**t campaign of Cameron.

“I’m sorry, that’s life and s**t happens.”

Mr Oettinger, a member of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrat party, was echoing a view previously expressed by his boss.

Jean-Claude Juncker, the commission’s president, said after the EU referendum: “Cameron was making the point that the referendum was mainly about migration and immigration.

“I don’t believe this is the case because this problem is a problem which concerns all of us.”

Instead he said the win for Vote Leave was because of the former Prime Minister’s repeated criticisms of the EU during his time on office.

Mr Juncker said: “If you are telling people for years that something is wrong with the union, you cannot be taken by surprise if voters believe you.”

Mr Oettinger’s comments came as Liam Fox was accused of being vague and confused about the country's post-Brexit trading status.

The International Trade Secretary told the World Trade Organisation that Britain would leave "no legal vacuum" with the world after leaving the European Union.

He said the UK would continue to uphold its international trading commitments after Brexit, but critics said he was sending out mixed messages following weekend reports that he would use his speech to signal support for pulling the UK out of the EU customs union so he could legally strike new trade deals around the world.
