A HERO Border Patrol agent stopped the Texas gunman after rushing into Robb Elementary School without backup, according to various reports.
The agent, who was working nearby when the shooting began, reportedly rushed into the school without waiting for backup and shot and killed Salvador Ramos, 18.
He was wounded but able to walk out of the school, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press.
Border Patrol sources told Fox News' Bill Melugin that the unidentified agent was part of an elite tactical unit.
"I’m told he entered with a tactical team while TX LEOs were engaged w/ barricaded shooter," Melugin. "Agent was injured."
"I’m told that a BORTAC agent went in with his technical group with other agents. They formed a stacking maneuver while Texas law enforcement was engaged with the shooter, who was barricaded," Melugin said on Fox News on Tuesday.

"They came in from opposite sides. The BORTAC agent ended up exchanging gunfire with the shooter, killed the shooter, and I am told that the agent was injured in his leg. They are trying to figure out if he was shot in the leg or hit by shrapnel."
Police say Ramos barricaded himself inside a classroom, “shooting anyone that was in his way," and killing 19 students and two teachers.
Police and others responding to Tuesday’s attack broke windows at the school in an effort to allow students and teachers inside to escape, Lt. Christopher Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety said Wednesday on NBC’s “Today.”
Olivarez told CNN that all victims were in the same fourth-grade classroom at Robb Elementary School.
