What did Beto O'Rourke say at the Texas school shooting briefing?

On May 25, 2022, Governor Greg Abbott held a press conference to speak about the Robb Elementary School shooting that left 19 kids and two teachers dead.

Among those in attendance was Beto O'Rourke, who yelled at the Texas governor as he finished speaking at the conference.

"You are doing nothing," O'Rourke said to the governor, before officials responded, "you're out of line and an embarrassment," according to .

Someone was then heard shouting, "I can't believe you, you sick son of a b***h, you would come to an event like this to make it a political issue. A**holes like you, get out of here."

Shortly after, O'Rourke was escorted out of the press conference.

He then went outside of the auditorium to speak to the media, where he criticized Abbott for not supporting red flag laws, gun storage laws, and an outright ban on AR-15s and AK-47s.

“This 18-year-old, who just turned 18, bought an AR-15 and took it into an elementary school and shot kids in the face and killed them,” O’Rourke told new members.

“Why are we letting this happen in this country? Why is this happening in this state? Year after year, city after city.”

Just hours before the briefing, O'Rourke took to Twitter to urge Abbott to pull out of the upcoming NRA convention.

"Governor Abbott, if you have any decency, you will immediately withdraw from this weekend’s NRA convention and urge them to hold it anywhere but Texas," .

Who is Beto O'Rourke?

O'Rourke is known as an American politician who famously served as the U.S. representative for Texas' 16th congressional district from 2013 to 2019.

As a member of the Democratic Party, O'Rourke ran for U.S. Senate in 2018 and for a Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.

He is now running against Abbott to become the next governor of Texas.

What happened at Robb Elementary School?

On May 24, 2022, a school shooting was reported at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, around 11:30am local time.

It ultimately took the lives of at least 19 students and three adults, including fourth-grade teacher Eva Mireles.

In a press conference, Abbott said the shooter, "shot and killed horrifically and incomprehensibly 14 students and killed a teacher," adding that they had access to a handgun and possibly a rifle.

The shooter was later identified as Salvador Ramos, 18, and is believed to have been killed by responding law enforcement officers.

At the press briefing, Abbott revealed that Ramos posted on Facebook just 30 minutes before the shootings.

Ramos posted, "I'm going to shoot my grandmother."

Then posted, "I shot my grandmother."

His final post was then less than 15 minutes before entering the school, "I'm going to shoot an elementary school."

The shooting has since been labeled as one of the deadliest US school shootings, behind the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in 2012, and the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida.
