While parents and family members of Robb Elementary students waited anxiously outside the school for updates, some children were able to escape through windows with the help of officials.

Border Patrol officials and local police worked together to pull children out through windows and direct them to safety during the shooting.

The investigation into the shooting remains in early stages. In a press conference Friday, an updated timeline of the incident was provided.

Steven C. McCraw, the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, confirmed that Ramos was inside the elementary school for more than an hour before he was shot and killed by a Border Patrol officer.

McCraw said there were 19 officers in the hallway of the school waiting to enter the classroom where Ramos had posted. But they did not breach the classroom until a janitor brought them keys.

Local police thought Ramos had barricaded himself in the classroom, and believed “there were no kids at risk," McCraw said, which is why they did not enter the classroom sooner.

“From the benefit of hindsight where I’m sitting now, of course, it was not the right decision,” McCraw said.

“It was the wrong decision. Period.”

These details differ from initial accounts given to the public.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Friday: “The information that I was given turned out, in part, to be inaccurate and I am absolutely livid about that."

Abbott went on to say the incident and all who were involved will be “thoroughly, exhaustively” investigated.

In previous press conferences, Abbott had praised the swift response of law enforcement officials, saying they displayed “amazing courage by running toward gunfire."

While parents were outside of the school begging police to act, students inside were calling for help.

The first reported 911 call was at 11.30am, moments after Ramos, 18, crashed his grandmother's pickup truck outside the school.

Another three 911 calls, reportedly from a student inside the classroom where Ramos was shooting, came shortly after 12pm.

That same student would call 911 at least three more times, begging the dispatcher to "please send the police now."

Those calls came in more than 30 minutes before Border Patrol entered the classroom and fired at Ramos, killing him.

The student who repeatedly called 911 eventually made it outside to safety, according to reports.

PARENTS OUTRAGED BY POLICE RESPONSE

As Ramos was firing inside the school, parents and loved ones gathered outside, trying to gain entry and rescue their children.

Jennifer Gaitan was one of the first parents to arrive.

Gaitan, who has spoken to multiple media outlets, said on CNN that she heard and witnessed officers' response to parents.

The frantic mom claims that she begged the police to do something.

And while she was one of the first to arrive on the scene, it was about two hours until she was reunited with her daughter, Jazlynn.

Jacinto Cazares, the devastated father of one of the children brutally killed in the horror attack, said he considered trying to get in the building while cops held tight.

Ten-year-old Jackie Cazares' dad rushed to the school after hearing about the shooting - but says when he arrived, officers had not entered the premises, reports

He said he told other witnesses: "Let’s just rush in because the cops aren’t doing anything like they are supposed to."

Jacinto said he believes "more could have been done" to save the innocent youngsters and their teachers.

He told the outlet: "There were at least 40 lawmen armed to the teeth but didn't do a darn thing [until] it was far too late."
