THOUSANDS of potentially unsafe condoms have been handed out to university students during Freshers' Week.
Students have been warned that the "promotional only" condoms don't contain safety markings and may split if used.
The condoms were distributed by nightclub Kasbah to new students at Coventry and Warwick Universities.
Kasbah later tweeted to say the condoms were only meant to be "a joke" and that people were told not to use them.
Contraception should feature an expiry date, batch number, British Standards Kitemark and CE European Standards mark, health chiefs have said.

Charlotte Hubbard, Lead Nurse for Young and Vulnerable People in the Sexual Health Service, said: “We want young people to have fun but stay safe so we are encouraging everyone to always check their contraception for the safety marks.
"They are there for a reason.
“It’s important that young people take responsibility for their own sexual health."
Contraception and contraceptive advice is free for students in the UK.
You can get contraception for free from any GP – or a pharmacy if you have a prescription from your GP - as well as community contraceptive clinics, some GUM clinics and sexual health clinics.
