Woman, 47, killed while walking across zebra crossing as cops quiz Toyota driver

A WOMAN has died after being struck by a car while walking on a zebra crossing.

Police are quizzing a Toyota driver after the 47-year-old was hit in Harehills, Leeds, shortly after midnight today.

The woman was crossing Ashley Road when she was hit by a Toyota Auris, cops say.

She was taken to hospital but sadly died a short while later.

Officers were called shortly after midnight on Saturday to reports that the Auris had been involved in a collision with a pedestrian, who was on the zebra crossing at the time.

The driver remained at the scene to help police.

Police are appealing for two witnesses who were in a dark coloured car and stopped at the crossing at the time of the incident to come forward.

The spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal road traffic collision on Ashley Road, Leeds. Officers were called at 00.18 this morning to reports that a white Toyota Auris had been in a collision with a pedestrian.

"The Toyota Auris was travelling in the direction of Stanley Road when it was in collision with the pedestrian who was on the zebra crossing at the time.

"The pedestrian, a 47-year-old woman, was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short while later. The driver of the Toyota Auris remained at the scene to help police with their enquiries.
