SHOCKING footage shows an idiot motorist hogging the middle lane of the M5 - while nattering away on his mobile phone.

The offending commuter, in a silver Vauxhall, can be seen driving down the motorway in a video filmed by a passenger in another car.

Apparently unaware of the car behind him, which is trying to get past, the man refuses to budge into the empty left lane.

The frustrated driver behind eventually overtakes in the outside lane, while a passenger films the lane hogger.

As they pass, the reason for the motorist's apparent lack of awareness becomes clear - because the man can be seen chatting on his mobile phone.

The incident was caught on camera near Junction 14 of the M5 for Thornbury, Gloucs, just after 8.30pm on Wednesday.

Using a mobile while driving is illegal, with three penalty points and a fine of £100 - rising to six points and £200 when new rules come into force in 2017.

And lane hogging could count as antisocial driving resulting in three points and a £100 fine under another law introduced in 2013.

Section 264 of the Highway Code states: "You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear."

Gloucestershire Constabulary said: "Inconsiderate driving puts lives at risk, including middle lane hogging and using mobile phones.

"Poor driving can lead to collisions and we urge motorists to follow the Highway Code, be aware of their manner of driving and their surroundings."

According to RAC Foundation research, middle lane hogging wastes a third of the motorway's capacity with the slowest, inside lane rendered unused.
