Woman who weighed 350 pounds and couldn’t fit in an airplane seat or put on her own BRA inspired to lose weight
Lyss Remaly decided to turn her life around when she realised her weight had gotten out of control
A WOMAN has recounted the moment she realised she couldn’t fit in her airplane seat – sparking a lifestyle change that saw her lose more than half her weight.
Lyss Remaly weighed 350 pounds at just 21-years-old, with the young woman left breathless as she tried to walk up a flight of stairs at her apartment, even unable to put on her own bra.
But she said that the defining moment was when she was flying Las Vegas to New York to audition for an off-Broadway play and realised she couldn’t fit in the airplane seat and needed an extender seat belt.
She said: “I was a secret eater. I lived the philosophy very similar to the idea if a tree falls down in the woods does it still make a sound? If a fat kid eats by herself does it still count? I said no and ate everything I wanted to eat by myself then would still go for dinner with my family and friends.
“I lived in Las Vegas where everything is open 24 hours and is so accessible anytime you want it.”
Listing Burger Kings, Italian food, Hawaiin pizzas and Chinese takeaway as some of her favourite foods, Ms Remaly said her eating habits were out of control.
She said: “I would cook a full box of flaked mashed potatoes with cheese, butter and sour cream and sit and eat the whole thing.”
Deciding to make a change, the young woman made a list of all her “terrible habits”, working her way down the list.
She said: “I had a whole life I wanted to live, and I was killing myself instead. I knew I had to change.”
Despite undergoing bariatric surgery in 2010, she said she needed to change her eating and exercise habits to fully improve her health.
She said the most exercise she had done for years was walking from the car to her door, using the to keep her motivated.
Despite struggling with her food demons, the now 28-year-old said she filled her diet with eggs, avocado, lean chicken and turkey, fish, tons of veg, good fats like olive oil, almonds and coconut oil.

Now weighing 135 pounds and a bariatric coach herself, Lyss said one of the most important things for people hoping to lose weight was to be honest with themselves.
She said: “You can tell people anything you want but the only person you are cheating is yourself.
“Work really hard and keep your goal in mind. It will all be worth it. ”
