TERRIFYING video shows the moment an orangutan grabs a zoo visitor by the leg and apparently tries to drag him into its cage.

The powerful ape - thought to be a female - locks both hands and a foot around the victim and refuses to let go as another man tries to save him.

It is not clear where the footage was taken, but it went viral after being shared on Reddit.

It shows a man standing near the ape's enclosure when it suddenly stretches an arm through the cage and grabs his T-shirt.

He tries to pull away as the orangutan yanks him towards the bars.

It then grabs hold of his leg, lifting him off the ground and twisting while holding the bars with its feet for a tighter grip.

The video ends at that point and it is not known if the man suffered any injuries.

But online viewers said an ape could easily hurt a man.

One Redditor said: "When the orangutan starts grabbing him with his feet it becomes next-level terrifying."

Another said: "I don't know how strong orangutans are but I was pretty worried it was gonna break his leg."

Another said: "Google people who have been attacked by apes. They are strong enough to rip you to pieces.

"And they go for your face and your hands first."

Others blamed the visitor for getting too close, and said the ape should not be in captivity.

One said: "All things considered, he would have probably have been OK.

"Orangutans are one of the more docile apes out there. Not one recorded death of a human from an orangutan.

"This orangutan was clearly agitated, but he didn’t seem to want to do any serious harm from what I could see, but then again I’m no expert."

Orangutans are around seven times stronger than humans, experts say.

They are able to lift 500lbs - three times their body weight - with long muscular arms adapted for swinging through trees.

And their bite is almost as powerful as a lion's even though they mostly eat fruit and leaves.

They are mostly solitary and violence is rare, but in 2016 scientists saw a female and a "hired gun" male in Borneo.

There are no recorded fatal attacks on humans.

Orangutans are endangered with only around 50,000 left in the wild after the destruction of much of their jungle home in Indonesia.

We previously told the sickening story of a female orangutan who was forced to be a prostitute at a brothel in Borneo.
