Are dogs allowed on UK beaches?
AS the weather gets warmer, UK beaches become a popular hotspot for families – and their pets.
Here’s everything you need to know about taking your furry friend to any UK beach this year.
Are dogs allowed on UK beaches?
If you’re thinking about taking your pet to the beach for a sandy walk or a dip in the sea, then the good news is – yes, dogs are allowed on UK beaches.
However, some local councils impose a dog ban throughout the year, limiting when your pooch can visit beaches or certain areas they are allowed to occupy.
The restrictions prohibit dogs from visiting the beach during busy seasons – with some bans starting as early as April and lasting until as late as September.
It is important to check if the beach you are visiting has a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).
If you and your pet are found on a beach where these restrictions are enforced, you could face a fine between £100 and £1,000.
These dog exclusion zones are enforced to ensure everyone is able to enjoy the beaches and UK coastlines during busy seasons.
However, the rules in a PSPO do not apply to a person who is registered as blind.
It also does not apply to a person who has a disability that affects their mobility, manual dexterity, physical coordination, or ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move everyday objects.

Those who are assisted by a dog trained by a prescribed charity do not have to worry about the restrictions.

Are dogs allowed to go in the sea?
If your canine companion fancies a dip in the sea then they are free to play in the open water.
However, it is important to consider their safety when they do so.
Drinking salt water can give your dog a nasty bout of sickness, and in some cases can lead to them becoming seriously ill or dehydrated.
And you should check beforehand if there are any known issues with the sea in the area.
Although swimming is a great exercise for dogs and a refreshing way to cool them down after a day in the sun – the sea can be very unpredictable.
The safest way for your pooch to enjoy a swim and a splash is to read up about currents ahead of time, check the tide and pay attention to signs and flags warning you not to swim around the beach.
