ISRAEL was on the brink of bombing Iran until Shimon Peres intervened, it has been sensationally claimed.

Peres, whose funeral was today, served as president of the Jewish state between 2007 and 2014.

And allegations made today suggest the Belarus-born politician pulled his country back from the brink of a potentially-catastrophic war in 2010 after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu set his sights firmly on airstrikes.

managing editor David Brinn said today that Peres has sworn him to secrecy until after his death following a conversation about the incident two years ago.

Peres is alleged to have told Brinn: “I stopped Netanyahu from attacking Iran.

“I don’t want to go into more details, but I can tell you that he was ready to launch an attack and I stopped him.

“I told him the results would be catastrophic.”

It was long feared that Israel might launch preemptive air strikes to take out Iran’s nuclear reactors.

The Islamic state has in the past promised to “wipe Israel off the map”.

But experts fear a war in the region would likely drag in world players like the USA, Russia and China.

Brinn later asked Peres whether he could report the allegations and was told: “When I’m dead.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu led tributes to Peres at his funeral in Jerusalem today.

He called Peres “a great man of Israel”.

Adding: “He was a great man of the world. Israel grieves for him. The world grieves for him.”

But Netanyahu admitted they had never “glossed over their differences”.

US President Barack Obama and former chief Bill Clinton also paid tribute, while David Cameron, Tony Blair, Boris Johnson and Prince Charles were in attendance.

Peres died on Wednesday aged 93.

Born in what was then Poland, he moved to the Middle East before the creation of Israel in 1948 and was a key player in all the of the fledgling state’s early challenges.

He served as president once and prime minister twice, becoming a uniting voice between Israel and Palestinians when he worked to agree the Oslo accords with Yasser Arafat and Clinton in 1994.
