Dartford crossing closed after car bursts into flames causing severe delays
CARS were at a standstill on the M25 Dartford crossing after a car burst into flames on Sunday afternoon.
Smoke could be seen billowing from the vehicle in a series of dramatic pictures of the incident, which left roads surrounding the crossing severely congested.
Drivers making their way over the Queen Elizabeth II bridge southbound into Kent were facing standstill traffic and delays of up to 30 minutes throughout the afternoon.
Firefighters rushed to the scene between junctions 31 and 1A of the motorway, as smoke could be seen wafting from the bridge from miles away.
Motorists took to Twitter to warn others against travelling through the area.
One user wrote: "Do not attempt to go over Dartford Bridge.
"Standstill traffic going way back."
Another warned: "Just seen a big fire coming from the top of Dartford Bridge."
Residents living miles away could see the smoke rippling across the sky.
The bridge remained blocked until 4:45pm.
