iPhone 7 comes bottom of the heap in smartphone battery life test
Consumer group Which? pitted the battery life of Apple's iPhone 7 against three of its Android rivals
APPLE'S iPhone 7 smartphone has come last in a battery life test against three of its biggest Android rivals.
Pitted against the Samsung Galaxy S7, HTC 10 and LG G5, Apple’s iPhone 7 came bottom of the heap in the battery life stakes when making calls and using 3G to browse the internet, Which? claims.
The iPhone 7’s battery ran out after around 11 hours of call time, compared to the HTC 10’s top-rated 31-hour lifespan.
With the HTC 10 taking the top spot for battery life when making calls, the LG G5 took second place giving users 1,579 minutes or just over 23 hours of call time. The Samsung Galaxy S7 gave up the ghost after 1,492 minutes or 24 hours.
For internet browsing, iPhone 7 users can browse for around 10 hours or 615 minutes before their battery runs out, worse than any of its key rivals.
Samsung’s Galaxy S7 lasts for around 11 hours when used for browsing the internet, while the LG G5 can be used for 640 minutes or around 10 hours.
In terms of why the iPhone 7’s battery life is poor compared to its rivals, Which?’s Callum Tennent said: “It may sound obvious, but the majority of the fault lies in its comparatively tiny cell.
‘Smartphone batteries are measured in milliampere hours (mAh).
“The iPhone 7 has a 1,960mAH battery, while the HTC has a 3,000mAH battery.
"It should hardly be surprising the one battery nearly half the size of another offers roughly half as much charge”.
Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were launched last month, minus the headphone jack. The company claimed the models offer up to two additional hours of battery life compared to last year’s iPhone 6 phones.
A recent US-based survey by Bank of America Merrill Lynch found that 65 per cent of consumers cited longer battery life as the main reason they were upgrading to the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus models.
After keeping a low profile for the last few years, Nokia is expected to launch its new smartphones in time for Christmas.
Given the company’s history of producing phones with long battery lives, it will be interesting to see how it fares against its Apple and Samsung rivals.
