The bitter fight saw them trade personal insults, and the nation’s verdict to leave the EU ended Mr Cameron’s six year-long Premiership.

But The Sun can reveal the two Tory titans “put the world to rights” over whiskey on the balcony of a hotel room in Jerusalem last Thursday night.

The former friends and Tory leadership rivals – who have known each other since Oxford University days 30 years ago – were both staying at the five star King David Hotel.

They were among hundreds of world leaders gathering for legendary Israeli statesman Shimon Peres’s funeral the following day.

One pal dubbed the bonding session “the Middle East peace process”.

Foreign Secretary Boris has told friends that over a very long conversation, he and Mr Cameron had “a pretty frank exchange of views” over the EU fight, during which they blamed each other for their huge fall out.

After eventually clearing the air, they moved on to share views on world affairs and the high and lows of the ex-PM’s time in No10.

Since coming back from Israel, Boris has mounted a passionate defence of Mr Cameron’s legacy, telling friends: "It’s not fair at all to say Dave was a bad leader of the party because of how it all ended.

“He turned it all around and made us electable again, and that was a huge achievement.

“Neither Gove nor I wanted him to go after the referendum result, and it was a deep shock to both of us when he did.”

The Jerusalem meeting was preceded by a round of grudging text messages between Boris and Mr Cameron over the summer.

But both men are still freezing out sacked Justice Secretary Michael Gove, who they both blame for their summer leadership disaster.

Despite campaigning hand in hand with Boris, Mr Gove torpedoed his bid for No10 by turning on him and running for the nation’s top job himself.
