Red-faced clergyman apologises to parishioners after putting up saucy innuendo notice board by mistake

Rev Bob Marshall did not realise meaning of the slogan 'Forgiveness is swallowing when you want to spit'

A RED-faced clergyman was forced to apologise to parishioners after accidentally writing saucy joke on a sign up outside his church.

Reverend Bob Marshall put up the sign saying: "Forgiveness is swallowing when you want to spit!"; - without realising it had a sexual innuendo.

Married Rev Marshall, 58, put it outside the Ebenezer Baptist Chapel in Buckley, North Wales.

But it has now been removed - after it was blown over in a gust of wind.

American-born Rev Marshall apologised to parishioners over his slip of the tongue in the sign.

He said: "When I put that sign out I had no idea what it meant over here.

"Forgiveness is what it's all about. One lady said she didn't even see the word forgiveness.

"It's obvious to me what I meant but it never really entered my mind it had another meaning.

"The Lord helped me take it down because the wind blew it over."

Rev Marshall puts signs up outside the Ebenezer Baptist Chapel every week and has one up at the moment saying: "Honk if you love Jesus: Text while driving if you want to meet him."

Rev Marshall said: "The intention is to be hard-hitting. I want people to think. It's real stuff."
