RISHI SUNAK resigned from the role of Chancellor in July 2022 and campaigned to become the next Tory party leader.

He lost out to the now Prime Minister, Liz Truss, but where is Sunak now, and could he become Chancellor again?

After Sunak, 42, lost his place in government, he ruled out leaving politics entirely.

He said: “I am very committed to my constituents in North Yorkshire… and as long as they will have me I plan to keep serving them not just in the immediate future but also at the next election.”

The former Chancellor is still a Member of Parliament and continues to serve as the Conservative MP for Richmond, Yorkshire.

What is Rishi Sunak doing?

Sunak described his current job as “just to support a Conservative government”.

He has been the MP for Richmond since 2015 and he will continue to work in this role.

The 42-year-old said that Liz Truss would have his “full support”.

Why has Rishi Sunak quit as Chancellor?

The Chancellor and Health Secretary resigned in dramatic fashion as Boris Johnson reeled from the massive fallout over the Chris Pincher scandal.

In his letter to the Prime Minister, Sunak began by saying is was with “deep sadness” that he was resigning and it had been an “enormous privilege to serve our country”.

He continued: “The public rightly expects government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously.

“I recognise this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.”

He added: “I have served as your Chancellor with gratitude that you entrusted me with stewardship of the nation’s economy and finances.

“Above all, I have respected the powerful mandate given to you by the British people in 2019 and how under your leadership we broke the Brexit deadlock.

“That is why I have always tried to compromise in order to deliver the things you want to achieve.

“On those occasions where I disagreed with you privately, I have supported you publicly.”

Sunak had been readying a joint speech with the PM on the economy, but said that in preparation for it, “it has become clear to me that our approaches are fundamentally too different”.

He concluded: “I am sad to be leaving Government but I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we cannot continue like this.”

Sajid Javid also resigned and demanded Johnson leave Downing Street for the good of the Tory party, and the country.

Sunak‘s successor was appointed just hours after he resigned.

When was Rishi Sunak appointed Chancellor?

Sunak was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer on February 13, 2020.

He replaced Sajid Javid, who resigned from the Government after being offered the chance to stay in a Cabinet reshuffle – but only if he sacked all of his advisers.

Sunak served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury before becoming Chancellor.

Could Rishi Sunak become Chancellor again?

Liz Truss did not appoint Sunak to her Cabinet and therefore he no longer has a role in Government, however he has made it clear that he is “absolutely” still interested in having a political career.

The ex Chancellor has not ruled out running for PM again in the future, however he did say he would need time “to recover”.

Jeremy Hunt has been appointed as Chancellor, after Kwasi Kwarteng was sacked from the role today, on October, 14, 2022.

Sunak, however, cannot be ruled out from ever being Chancellor again.
