The enraged mother has now taken action, putting a sign out the front of her house shaming the "low lives" who stole from her.

The mother, from Ipswich, Suffolk, said: "It had a dramatic affect on my finances and my ability to provide for my kids.

"It made me feel sick to the stomach."

The family has been forced to rely on emergency food parcels and loans of milk and bread from her local corner shop to get by after having her tax credits wrongly stopped for seven weeks.

She said that the gang had struck about 3am on Sunday, September 11 - just hours after Mandy had friends over for her 40th birthday.

The 40-year-old said that £10 had been given to her as a gift from her best friend, while the remaining £49 was to be spent on food for her children.

She said: "It has put a dampener on this whole house.

"It's been a pretty awful experience.

"£59 to me is an awful lot of money - £5 is an awful lot of money being a single mum."

She said that "every bit counts" when it came to supporting her young family.

WHAT MANDY'S SIGN SAYS

To the low lives that climbed in my window and stole money from my purse in the early hours of 11th September.
The money was 40th birthday money and to feed my kid, my birthday was Sunday.
Just to let you know the police are involved!!! STILL.

Suffolk Police said they're hunting the burglars and urged anyone who can help to call 101 quoting reference 54815/16.

She said: "I put that sign outside my house and lots of people have stopped and read it so I know it's doing some good.

"I'm not taking it down until I know that the message is getting out there."
