They warned 500 campaigners will block distribution centres and fill up supermarket trolleys with milk to prevent customers from buying it.

The government are now in crisis talks with farmers.

Daniel Kidby, co-founder of Animal Rebellion, said: "We will be disrupting dairy supply across the UK with 500 day after day cutting off the supply of milk to supermarkets and causing unignorable high-level disruption which will be felt by tens of million of people across the UK.

“For a one-to-two-week period there will be no milk on the supermarket shelves. This has never been done before in the UK or around the world, that we know of.”

Eco warriors say the protest will begin in September.

The group says a combination of a plant-based society and mass rewilding is the best solution to the climate crisis.

The Agricultural and Horticulture Development Board now meeting with UK dairy factories and farmers.

An AHDB spokesman said: "This threat has the potential to be a serious matter and representatives from across the industry have met to discuss the issue and are considering how to support farmers and processors in the event of any disruption."

In August last year 50 Animal Rebellion activists blockaded Arla’s milk processing and distribution centre in Buckinghamshire - the UK’s largest dairy factory.

Paul Savage, agricultural director for Arla UK, said the safety of its farmers was the highest priority.

He said: "While we have no indication at this time that farms are being targeted directly by these activists, we continue to monitor any risks, to be as prepared as possible."

"We also continue to share on our internal farmer channels some guidance and advice for our farmers on how to act, prepare and respond, in case they come into contact with activists on-farm."

British farmers and their cows produce 60 million pints of milk a day.

There are around 8,000 dairy farmers in the UK, with 98 per cent of British households have dairy products in their fridge.
