Britain’s five best beaches revealed – the top spot could surprise you but has your favourite made the list?
BRITAIN’S five best beaches have been revealed ahead of a scorching heatwave that will bake Britain.
Temperatures are expected to reach highs 27C today with plenty of sunshine across the country, according to the Met Office.
So Brits are expected to flock to beaches up and down the country to cool down.
And just in time for the heat, The Sunday Times has revealed its top picks for its Best Beaches Guide - using factors such as cleanliness, water quality and access to toilets at play.
1. Sandhaven, South Shields
Sandhaven Beach in Tyne & Wear has topped this year’s list with reviewer Chris Haslam hailing saying it “ticked all the boxes”.

The beach, which is roughly a mile long, grabbed the top spot because of the regular maintenance of its sand and facilities.
It also scooped marks for its efforts to preserve its Victorian heritage.
Nick Jones, who runs the not-for-profit South Shields Surf School on the beach, said: “Few people beyond South Shields know about Sandhaven, but those who use the beach are passionate about protecting it and proud to share it.”

2. Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire
South Shields in Lincolnshire's Mablethorpe has grabbed second place.
It’s the first time the beach has made it to the guide, but the spot is well known to those in the east.
Back in 2019 the area was ranked as one of the country's most poverty-stricken places.
However, since then £24million has been injected into the community after it was gifted a government grant.
3. Lunan Bay
This Scottish beauty rings in at number three - and was ranked as the best beach in Scotland.
It’s known for its surfing, fishing and horseback riding - but the views are just as amazing as the activities.
Nearby its beautiful sand is the ruins of a 12th-century castle - and a sustainable and planet-friendly gin distillery, Arbikie.
4. Watergate Bay
Cornwall’s Watergate Bay is well known as one of the South West’s most stunning beaches.
The two-mile stretch of gorgeous sand offers board-riding, kiting, fitness and yoga lessons, posh dining and even the odd polo tournament.
And it is a favourite spot for surfers - as the waves are consistent at all phases of the tide.
5. Three Cliffs Bay, Gower
Three Cliffs Bay is widely considered one of the best beaches in Wales.
