The 52-year-old then insisted "and your kids die, too."

Deadly Matthew is hurtling towards the sunshine state with authorities urging millions of residents to flee their homes or risk being killed by the 150mph winds.

While discussing the threat of the powerful storm on Thursday, news anchor Smith pulled no punches.

He said: “This moves 20 miles to the west, and you and everyone you know are dead — all of you — because you can't survive it.

“It's not possible unless you're very, very lucky.

"And your kids die, too."

Before he spoke to a Florida woman who is refusing to leave her home, the presenter also said: "I'll ask her why she's staying, and if she expects us to cover her funeral.”

Governor Rick Scott has warned residents that their “time is up.”

He added: “You have to evacuate now if you are in an evacuation zone.

“To everyone on Florida's east coast, if you are reluctant to evacuate, just think of all the people the Hurricane has already killed.

“You and your family could be among these numbers if you don't take this seriously.”

More than 200,000 were left without power as the storm moved its way up the coast 20-miles out at sea.

A true picture of the devastation wrecked on the Caribbean became increasingly clear overnight.

Hundreds were killed in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and the Bahamas.

And the figure is expected to increase with some towns in impoverished Haiti reporting that 80 per cent of their buildings have been destroyed.

Fifty people were reported dead in the town of Roche-a-Bateau alone.

Governor Scott has also told residents "there are no excuses, you need to leave” after details emerged of the damage wreaked on Haiti.

He said: "If you're reluctant to evacuate, just think of all the people this storm has already killed.

"You and your family could be among these numbers if you don't take this seriously."
