Passersby rushed to help him as he slumped to the ground while his attackers made their escape in Lianyungang City, China.

The daylight attack took place in full view of young children just outside the city's park.

Photos show Guan covered in blood with the dagger's handle visible on the side of his head.

Nearly the entire blade penetrated his skull.

Shocked witnesses called the emergency services who rushed him to Guannan County People's Hospital.

Doctors worked desperately to remove the blade without damaging his brain.
