Channel 5 Gadget Show names world’s best gizmo and you’ve probably NEVER heard of it
You never would have guessed this in a million years
The world's best gizmo has been named and you almost definitely haven't heard of it.
The eggheads on Channel 5's The Gadget Show have named the world's best invention.
And shock - it's certainly not what you'd expect.
The show declared that the world's best gadget isn't the iPhone, iPod or the Walkman, but in fact it's the Motorola Dynatac 8000.
Yes, you read that correctly, the best gadget of all time is a mobile from 1984.
One of those funny looking ones with the antenna and the telephone box-style keypad.
While this may come as a shock to many (especially those born after 1970), The Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury argues:
“Without ‘the brick’ we would have no smartphones or mobile communication.
"Though pretty pedestrian by today’s standards, the influence this device had is enormous, significantly altering the very way we communicate today.
"Short of time machines and teleportation devices nothing will come close to challenging it.”
The complete list of the top ten gadgets of all time, as decided by the show is as follows:
- Motorola Dynatac 8000
- The iPhone
- The IBM 5150 PC
- The Sony Walkman
- Tesla Model S
- Think Pad laptop
- iPad
- Sky +
- Oculus Rift VR
- Canon EOS 300D digital SLR camera
Some of the most interesting products in that list include the IBM 5150, the Tesla Model S and the Oculus Rift VR headset.
The IBM 5150 was released 35 years ago and is widely regarded as the world's first 'personal computer'.
The Tesla Model S, which is the only car to be in the top 10, is the first entirely electric car to break the 100mph barrier.

And the Oculus Rift VR is the newest gadget to be included, and is one of this year's most anticipated gadgets.
Despite a rather inclusionary list, many people will feel disappointed by the lack of inclusion for the likes of the iPod and any gaming console.
As the iPod entirely changed the world's musical landscape by shifting consumer focus from CD to MP3.
And many video game consoles have topped the list of many children's Christmas lists.
But none of this detracts from the fact that the Dynatac 8000 was one of the most groundbreaking inventions to ever hit our shelves.
It was lovingly given the nickname 'brick phone' due to having a similar appearance to a freshly clay-fired brick.
And while it wasn't one of the most attractive looking gizmos, it was certainly one of the most sought after.
The Dynatac 8000 cost roughly around £4,000 (in today's currency), with many of the originals now reselling for upwards of £200 on eBay and niche vintage mobile sites.
So while it may not be the gadget you'd expect to top the list, it's certainly one worth acknowledging as a spectacular piece of kit.
Motorola Dynatac 8000 - we salute you.
