Al-Zawahiri’s presence in Afghanistan exposes just how badly President Biden’s retreat in 2021 betrayed that country

HELL’S WAITING

LET us rejoice that the joint mastermind of 9/11 finally met justice in the form of two Hellfire missiles.

Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri, a doctor warped by extremism, orchestrated mass murder on that terrible day in 2001 and directed or inspired other atrocities including the 7/7 bombings.

If only he and Osama Bin Laden had been taken out many decades ago.

But while we salute the Americans’ perseverance, al-Zawahiri’s presence in Afghanistan exposes just how badly President Biden’s hasty retreat in 2021 betrayed that country.

The loathsome Taliban told him they were now a more moderate outfit.

Biden swallowed it. Then they reneged on every pledge and removed liberties Afghans had enjoyed for 20 years thanks to the West’s invasion.

And the fact al-Zawahiri was living at a Kabul “safe” house proves what we all feared:

For all those British and US forces’ lives sacrificed, Afghanistan is once again a cauldron of oppression and a haven for anti-Western terrorists.

FIX BORDERS

NEITHER Rishi Sunak nor Liz Truss must underestimate voters’ fury over illegal migrants crossing the Channel.

Some 696 did so on Monday alone. Our borders are simply gaping open.

The Left pretends every migrant is a genuine, destitute refugee from war or persecution. It is absolute fiction.

They even claim the Rwanda deportation policy has failed as a deterrent — when everyone, the migrants especially, knows it was blocked by a nameless Strasbourg judge before it could begin.

Priti Patel wants to pay France millions more to police their shores properly. Don’t waste our money, Home Secretary. The French bank it and laugh at us.

Whoever becomes PM must prioritise starting the Rwanda scheme in earnest.

We currently feed, clothe and house anyone who cheats their way into Britain. It delights the open-borders Left.

But it is not politically nor economically sustainable.

ROBBER BARONS

SPARE a thought for war profiteer Bernard Looney as your annual energy bill soars towards £3,700 and his oil giant BP makes £6.9billion in three months.

His industry, he bleats, faces a “trilemma” — of trying to provide secure, affordable, low carbon energy.

How about the household trilemma Brits face this winter? It’s between eating, heating or defaulting on bills.

Neither BP nor its rivals seem remotely concerned about our tariffs hitting record highs through 2023 and into 2024 while they cash in on Putin’s genocide.

But on September 5 our new PM had better have a solution. Millions are in despair, and their anger is dangerous.
