Shocking moment London bus driver ‘swerves into cyclist at busy junction’

SHOCKING video has emerged showing a London bus driver appearing to swerve into a cyclist at a busy junction.

The footage – captured on another cyclist’s helmet cam – shows a woman on a bike waiting at a set of traffic lights.

As the lights turn green, the woman takes a few seconds to react and pull away on the road which bears left.

But the bus next to her sets off and appears to swerve into her at the turning, nudging her off the road in what witnesses branded a “dangerous” move.

The video was taken by Silvio Diego near Elephant and Castle, South London, during rush hour at around 9am this morning.

The IT worker told the Standard: “He could have hit her pedals and either the cyclist goes flying or gets her feet trapped.”

After catching up with the number 168 bus, the cameraman sees his shaken fellow cyclist arguing with the driver.

She then cycles away towards the camera, telling Silvio: “I know he saw me.”

Posting the footage on his YouTube account, the 47-year-old made clear he had recorded the details of the bus to highlight his “appalling driving”.

He said: “The bus driver saw this cyclist but maybe because she took a second to realize the lights were green he decided to nudge her into the pavement and out of his way.

“Appalling driving and hope TfL and DFT take notice.”

Transport for London (TfL) has since confirmed a probe into the incident has been launched.

TfL’s head of bus operations Tony Akers said: “We expect the highest standards from all our bus drivers.

“We have asked Metroline, who operate the bus in question, to launch an immediate investigation into this incident.”

But keen cyclist Silvio said it wasn’t the first time he had seen a London bus being driven dangerously.

He added: “The worst part is that it's pretty pointless.

“They don't get anywhere further when they overtake – they just get stuck in another traffic jam.”
