In another day of blue on blue barrages the ex-Chancellor fumed: "You can't heat your home with hope.”

But the ex-Chancellor’s swipe comes as he admitted he would have to borrow billions to fund a new energy household handout, which team Truss brands a “whopping U-turn".

Mr Sunak has announced that every household will benefit from a £200 reduction in their bills by abolishing VAT on energy at a cost of £5 billion.

In an interview with Times Radio he said: “There are two groups of other people who will need more help - people on very low incomes and pensioners.

"Now, Liz Truss’ tax plans do virtually nothing for those people."

Team Truss said his pledge to borrow to fund the bung was a “whopping U-turn.”

They said: “He was criticising Liz to the rooftops for her tax cut promises only a few weeks ago so we couldn’t afford extra support for people - it’s a whopping U-turn.

"How can the public trust anything the guy says?”
