Hours earlier, the loved-up couple had gone to a restaurant to celebrate their friend Merve Y.'s 32nd birthday.

After the meal, they wondered to a nearby lookout point called Asiklar Tepesi, or Lovers' Hill.

The group had already been drinking in the restaurant and they carried on at the viewpoint, where they mingled with Merve and her boyfriend.

But a violent row soon broke out between Selcuk Cetiner, 41, and beautician Mehlika Derici, 35, allegedly out of jealousy.

According to the other couple, Cetiner pushed Mehlika to the ground before the two picked her back up.

He then allegedly shouted: "If we die, we die together."

Before Mehlika could react, he clasped his arms around her waist and then hurled himself off the cliff, taking her with him.

The pair plummeted 82 feet to their deaths.

Paramedics took their bodies to the morgue at Marmara Ereglisi Public Hospital, while police seized their mobile phones for analysis.

Some reports said victim Mehlika was a mother of two children.

Femicide is a growing problem in Turkey, particularly after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July last year.

According to the 2021 Annual Data Report by the 'We Will Stop Femicide Platform', 280 women were killed by men in 2021, while 217 women were found suspiciously dead.

According to data from the 'Monument Counter' - "a digital memorial for women killed by violence" that is updated daily - 246 femicides have taken place in Turkey so far this year.

It comes after a drunk Brit holidaymaker pushed her boyfriend to his death from their 100ft hotel balcony in a jealous rage, a court heard.

Victim Pegram Reece, 22, died instantly when he fell onto a concrete yard from the Turkish five-star hotel where he was staying with Mary Meyers Kayley on March 12.

Kayley was arrested on the charge of "deliberate killing" and appeared in court in Manavgat, where she is facing a life sentence.

Investigators believe Kayley pushed Reece to his death after a drunken row in their bloodstained hotel room, in Side, Antalya, the court heard on Tuesday.

Examiners found blood on the double bed's sheets, a pillow, on the walls and in front of the balcony door.

Hotel staff said they witnessed the couple drinking heavily in the hours leading up to Reece's death.

Reece was refused an alcoholic drink around 8pm because he was intoxicated, hotel staff said.

Staff had to take Kayley, 31, back to the room at 10pm because she was so drunk, they said. She claimed Reece was not in the room at that point.

After the discovery of Reece's body, officers said they had found broken drink glasses and other traces of blood which led them to believe there had been an attempt at cleaning the room.
