Police are now appealing for witnesses to the fatal crash as they work to identify the victim.

Insp Andy Storey from Roads Policing said: "We would appeal to anyone who was driving on either the east or westbound carriageways of the M4 near Junction 11 at around 2.50am to contact Police as we are trying to determine the circumstances which led to a pedestrian being on the motorway.

"In addition there are ongoing enquiries to identify the pedestrian at this time."

Police said that the pedestrian died at the scene while the lorry driver was uninjured but suffering from shock.

Police rushed to the scene after the emergency call at 2.57am, with authorities having to close off a number of lanes - with the road only just opening again about 11am.

During the delays, Highways England advised motorists to: "exit at junction 11 and follow the route marked with a hollow circle symbol on local road signs.

"This will take traffic via the B3270 to Winnersh, then on to the A329 briefly to join the A329(M) southbound back to the M4 junction 10."

Police were able to reopen parts of the motorway earlier this morning.

The incident caused traffic chaos with Read College forced to open late.

In a message to students, the college said: "M4 is closed and staff can't get in at the moment. College is likely to open late, will keep you updated."

Staff managed to open the college just before 9.30am.

Police are currently investigating the crash.
