Our neighbour’s been building a rat-infested mound of rubbish in his garden for a DECADE…we’re at the end of our tether

FURIOUS residents have "reached the end of their tether" with a mountain of rubbish they claim has been growing out of control for a decade now.

Broken fridges, old mattresses, abandoned shopping trollies and other discarded furniture keep getting dumped in the garden of a council flat in southwest Birmingham.

Shocking video footage revealed how the grassy space behind the building has become an unrecognisable eyesore.

The sea of garbage spreads right into the treeline with junk covering nearly every inch of land.

Broken plastic chairs, planks of wood and old bathtubs have built up into a mountain of rubble.

Neighbours said the humungous rubbish pile has even started attracting rats as toppled-over bins lie spilling their contents onto the ground.

As the trash heap gets bigger and bigger, it's almost becoming too cluttered for residents to walk through.

So years after the problem began, fuming neighbours have said "enough is enough".

Darren Holden, a hospital worker who lives in the building, said the state of the garden needs urgent attention before it becomes a hazard.

"The other neighbours and myself are just getting sick of it," he told , "We're getting rats in our gardens and it's getting worse and worse every year."

The 52-year-old needs to walk through the disgusting space to access his own garden so he complained to the council.

But years later he claimed he never received a response and the garden is still a mess.

Darren said: "I've lived in the property for 14 years and I'd say this has been going on for up to ten years now. Some of the neighbours have to look at all the rubbish from their windows.

"I've seen rats in my garden - my dog chased one off the other day. I have to go through this garden to get to my own so I have to walk through this every day."

He also told how the garden belongs to another tenant who is elderly.

The resident is thought to have a medical condition which could mean he might struggle to maintain the garden or stop litterbugs from dumping their waste.

Darren said: "It's full of old fridge freezers with the doors taken off, air fryers, televisions, baby baths, old chairs, lots of wood, bed bases, chairs, glass - you name it, it's in there.

"I saw a shopping trolley from Asda in the road the other day then noticed the next day it was in the garden.

"I have complained to the council before but nothing happened, I didn't hear back. Then it just carried on getting worse.

"I'm at the end of my tether now and don't know what to do. Enough is enough, people are getting fed up and I'm not putting up with it anymore."

He added: "I don't want to cause any issues for the guy who lives there - he's elderly and lives alone so he probably just needs some help. But something has to be done."

Birmingham City Council confirmed it had contacted the tenant and issued a warning letter to clear the garden within the next 14 days.

A spokesperson said: "We apologise for the rubbish that has accumulated in this front garden and for not responding previously.

"We have been in contact with the tenant about the items left in their front garden and the impact this is having on the local community.

"We have been working with them to resolve this and can confirm that the rubbish will be cleared today."

The neighbours' fury follows news of another similar rubbish heap at the end of July.

A towering mound of rat-infested rubbish dumped in a West Mids street was so big it could be seen from SPACE.
