Jars of ‘rare and fabled’ Marmite listed on eBay for £5k after Brexit bust-up sees Tesco pull it from shelves
Tongue-in-cheek posts start popping up on online marketplace as row deepens over pricing
CHEEKY eBay sellers are trying to cash in on a row between supermarket giant Tesco and Marmite producer Unilever - by flogging the salty spread online for as much as £5,000.
This morning, as news broke that Tesco has pulled popular items such as Marmite and Pot Noodles from its website following a bust up with Unilever over the plummeting pound, people began trying to sell off their unopened jars for sky high prices on the online marketplace.
One tongue-in-cheek post, which was listed today in Manchester, was asking £29.99 plus £2.80 postage.
In the description the seller said: "A much loved/hated spread once found in many cupboards across Britain, but following the decision to leave the EU has now become an extremely rare item.
"The decision to leave the EU is likely to cost thousands of jobs, and billions of taxpayer pounds; obstacles to employing foreign workers will hold back public and financial services; British people travelling abroad could be subject to visa controls and holidays and goods abroad will increase in cost; far-right agitators will continue to be emboldened by the xenophobia of UKIP and Brexit leaders.
"This rare jar of yeast extract could at least ensure that a family somewhere in the country will receive their recommended daily allowance of the B12 vitamin."
Another bold seller however took things even further, listing their unopened jar from London for a stonking £5,000 - albeit with free postage.
Under the heading "Rare 2016 genuine retail Marmite jar (unopened)", the description said: "One of the last remaining examples of this fabled product in private hands.

"Unsealed, it is in the same condition it was when it was plucked from the supermarket shelf. Little did I know it would be the last Marmite I ever bought - and now, you, too, can buy your last ever Marmite.
"FREE postage, UK only. I will not post this item to Europe."
On Thursday news emerged of the row between Tesco and Unilever - and a range of popular products, including Hellmann's mayonnaise, Marmite, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Knorr stock cubes and Pot Noodles are now unavailable on the website.
The two companies are currently locked in a war of words over who should bear the cost of the weakening pound.
Unilever has demanded steep price increases to offset the higher cost of imported goods, which are priced in euros and dollars.
But Tesco has suggested it will fight the rises – removing Unilever from its website and warning that some items could disappear from shelves if the row drags on.
Other supermarkets have indicated they may do the same.
The pound has fallen in value by around 17 per cent since the UK voted to leave the EU.
A Tesco spokesman said: “We are currently experiencing availability issues on a number of Unilever products. We always work to ensure customers get the best possible prices and we hope to have this issue resolved soon.”
A Unilever spokesperson has refused to comment.
Soon after the news broke today the internet was already flooded with memes poking fun at the row - with many paying tribute to Marmite as being something lost forever.
