MOANING pro-EU campaigners were slammed for “patronising and slut-shaming” voters in an astonishing attack by Michael Gove.

The former Minister attacked MPs and business groups for trying to “de-legitimise” the result of the Referendum with a wave of Project Fear-style sniping over the past week.

And he said they risked making exactly the same mistakes as the Remain campaign in the build up to the June 23.

Writing in the , he said: “During the Referendum, those thinking of voting Leave were told they didn’t understand what was in their own financial interests.

“They were told that they were associating with and/or legitimising racism and the sky would fall in if they didn’t do as they were told.

“The British people understandably didn’t like being patronised or slut-shamed so they looked closely, and with increasing attention, to the arguments.”

The ‘slut-shaming’ phrase sparked a wave of reaction on social media as the comments renewed the fierce war of words between Remain and Leave voters.

The term is defined as the experience of being labelled a sexually out of control girl or woman – and then being punished socially for possessing this identity.

Mr Gove – the former Justice Secretary and co-chair of Vote Leave during the Referendum – said it was time for pro-EU MPs to “honour” the Brexit result and realise it was about far more than Brits wanting to build a brick wall at the border to keep out immigrants.

He that it defied belief Europhile politicians were now arguing Brexit backers didn’t realise Britain would be pulled out of the single market.

He said: “We said it again and again.

"And just in case people didn’t hear what we’d said, the Remain camp spent millions reminding everyone of this supposed ‘gaffe’.”
