A WOMAN suspected of killing an eight-month-pregnant teenager to steal her unborn child handed herself in to police, leading to a huge mob trying to storm the station.
Mirian Siqueira, 25, gave herself up around midday on Friday nearly 48 hours after the start of a manhunt to catch her.
She was arrested after walking into a police station in the city of Sertaozinho in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo with her mum before being transferred to the nearby town of Pitangueiras.
It is here where she allegedly stabbed 15-year-old Valissia Fernandes de Jesus to death and cut open her womb before taking out her foetus, which failed to survive.
Mirian, who is said to have been faking her own pregnancy for months, disappeared after her husband Mateus returned home and discovered Valissia’s body in a barrel in their back garden.
He also found the unborn child’s body in a bathtub.
Before fleeing, she reportedly confessed to her husband she had stabbed her victim during a fight - but claimed the foetus was hers after she suffered a miscarriage.
Police said today she had also confessed to her sick crime after being arrested.
Around 100 vigilante locals tried to storm the police station where she was questioned, forcing riot officers to fire tear gas and shots into the air to disperse the angry crowds.
They took nearly 15 minutes to regain control of the situation and ensure the prisoner’s safety.
Siqueira, who managed to convince friends and some relatives she was pregnant when she was actually overweight, is understood to have told police interrogators she killed Valissia during a row after she reneged on a promise to give her her child when he was born.
Police chief Mauricio Nucci said: “She said she had been friends with Valissia for around two years and that they had a disagreement and rowed and she ended up stabbing her friend.
“She said she took the foetus out of Valissia’s womb because she imagined the baby could be alive and wanted him for herself.”
“She’s confirmed she thought she was pregnant for a time by her husband. But now she is conscious she is not pregnant.
“She says she is not suffering from any mental illness and is not taking medication or alcohol or drugs.
“She has admitted to committing the crime alone.
"She says she washed the knife and cleaned up the blood before hiding the weapon in her own house. We’re still trying to find that knife.”
Siqueira is expected to be remanded in custody while a criminal investigation led by an investigating judge continues.
The crime, which happened on Wednesday, is currently being investigated as a homicide and foetal abduction.
The dead teen’s sister Elida told on Friday how Valissia met her alleged killer at a photographic studio which was taking pictures of mums-to-be.
Police said before the suspect handed herself in that they believed the killing had been premeditated and Siqueira, who sold baby products, had invited Valissia round to her house on the pretext of showing her some baby shoes.
Speaking before the alleged killer handed herself in, Elida said: “Mirian suffered from false pregnancy delusions and we’ve since found out she couldn’t get pregnant.
“She opened up my sister’s womb to take her baby.
“Her stomach was large so everyone thought her story was true.
“She had made a room ready for her baby and talked about going to see her doctor every month.
“Everyone was so happy at my sister being pregnant. She’d bought all the baby clothes.
“Now we want justice. We want this woman found and made to pay for what she did.”
In comments also made before Siqueira surrendered to police, Mr Nucci said: “The suspect said she was pregnant but at no time did any relative ever accompany her to do an ultrasound scan.
“She just said she was pregnant but there was no proof.
“There are pictures of her with a protruding belly but it doesn’t look like the stomach of a pregnant woman, more like that of someone who is overweight.”
He added to local media: “Mirian also told her husband who discovered the foetus in the bathtub that she’d had a miscarriage.
“But a miscarriage involves loss of blood and the husband said he didn’t see any blood. Everything is pointing towards this being a premeditated crime with the objective being taking the unborn child out of the victim’s womb so she could say the child was hers.
“It’s like something out of a horror film, it’s horribly cruel.”
Earlier this year a woman from Colorado was convicted of cutting an unborn baby from its mother’s womb and sentenced to 100 years in prison.
Former nurse’s aide Dynel Lane, 35, attacked Michelle Wilkins when she was seven months pregnant after responding to Lane’s online ad for maternity and baby clothes.
Wilkins survived the March 18 2015 attack but her unborn girl did not.
