The hit happened in the yard of an apartment block, according to local media.

Former cop Stefankov is said to have defected to Russia to become Putin's police chief and was in charge of interogating prisoners.

The city's mayor Ivan Federov, said on a Telegram post: "A powerful explosion in the yard of a Melitopol high-rise in the city centre is likely the result of an FSB sweep.

"According to preliminary data, during the 'showdowns' they wanted to remove one of the police collaborators - the so-called 'chief of the People's Police Department of the People's Militia'.

He continued: "Denys Stefankov is one of the 118 police traitors for whom we were preparing to seize all their immovable and movable property.

"It should be clear to everyone who betrayed Ukraine: the Russians do not need you. Once you are used, you become expendable."

While Federov has not specified whether the ex-cop died in the explosion, Ukrainian media report he is dead.

News outlet claims he has not survived the assassination attempt, citing insider sources.

However Russian media agency TASS claims Stefankov is very much alive and well.

The Department of Internal Affairs said on Telegram: "Stormy fantasy does not give rest to fake Ukrainian media day or night.

"Denis Stefankov stands guard over the law in perfect order and health!"

The alleged assasination atempt comes amid a surge targeted assassinations of the Russian leaders officials in the past few weeks.

Most recently, last week four top officials in Ukraine were killed in explosions

Lyudmila Boyko who was organising a bogus referendum on joining Russia was killed alongside her husband, Oleg Boyko, 46- also a senior local official.
