Over 500 cops fired for ‘very serious’ gross misconduct over harassment, sexual assault and more in just four years

The Sun found a total of 546 officers were sacked by forces in England and Wales in the period starting in January 2012

NEARLY 550 cops have been fired for very serious gross misconduct in the past four years.

Their offences included corruption, improper disclosure of information, harassment and sexual assault.

The Sun found a total of 546 officers were sacked by forces in England and Wales in the period starting in January 2012.

Acting Home Affairs committee chairman Tim Loughton described the figures as “concerning”.

The Met had the most cases, with 244 before the end of last year, followed by Merseyside with 26 and South Yorkshire with 24.

Tory MP David Burrowes said the 'bad apples' have shamed majority of cops

The real figure is thought to be higher, as 15 forces refused to respond to a Freedom of Information request, citing exemptions.

Tory MP and Home Affairs Select Committee member David Burrowes said: “This is a huge number given that police officers are dismissed only for very serious cases of gross misconduct.

“These bad apples have shamed the majority of our brave professional police officers who put themselves on the line for our safety.”
