An off-duty doctor attempted to revive him at the scene with help from a lifeguard who got him out of the water but could do nothing to save him.

He was certified dead soon after the arrival of paramedics around lunchtime on Saturday.

No one from the beachside hotel was available for comment today.

The results of the post-mortem have not been made public.

A routine probe has been launched by a local investigating magistrate.
