LAUGHED ORDERS

I’m a pub landlord and I’ve been given a noise warning by the council for a very bizarre reason

COUNCIL killjoys have slapped a noise warning on a pub landlord — because his customers laugh too loudly.

Richard Nattriss, 53, was stunned to be served with a noise abatement order.

It followed a complaint about “laughing, talking and singing” coming from his beer garden.

Richard said: “Laughing, talking and singing are part of human behaviour when people are having fun, but that doesn’t seem to be a consideration any more.

“How do I stop my customers from laughing?

"If you ask me, there should be more laughter in life, not less.”

There were also moans that music from his pub, the Little Angel in Whitby, North Yorks, could be heard by local residents — and that he put his bin bags out too late.

Environmental health officers served three orders on Richard, who faces an unlimited fine if he fails to comply.

He is spending £10,000 on soundproofing and is putting his rubbish out earlier.

He said: “I’ve run the place the same way for 12 years.

"It seems someone has come to live in the town who hates the sound of people enjoying themselves.

“Since we opened up after Covid, ourselves and other pubs around us received letters warning about excessive noise.

“In lockdown people got used to silence.

"Now normal sounds of people enjoying themselves are considered intrusive.”

Scarborough Borough Council said it could not comment on ongoing noise investigations.
