First flakes of the winter season fall – but what are the odds of a White Christmas?

THE UK has officially seen the first snow of the winter- with the Scottish Highlands and Cumbria both experiencing the year's first flakes as temperatures dipped to a chilly 8C.

Residents in the Cairngorms, in the Scottish Highlands, are pretty familiar with the white stuff - but this year it's arrived earlier than usual.

Heather Negus, of Nevis Range Mountain Experience, said: "It is unusual to see snow quite this early in the West Highlands. It was very exciting to come to work this morning and see a dusting of snow on the upper slopes."

Meanwhile, although it didn't get the covering seen further north, Great Dun Fell in Cumbria also got a slight dusting.

But despite the snow arriving early, it doesn't seem likely it'll continue for a White Christmas.
