Two carjackers armed with a hammer crept up on them, a court heard yesterday.

The startled lovers were left cowering as the thieves began smashing the car’s windows.

Richard Hefford, 29, and an accomplice used a hammer to break their way in to the car before threatening the couple in the middle of their romantic tryst.

The attackers then forced them out before driving off with the vehicle, from the car park at Aylestone Meadows, Leicester.

The thugs also took a computer tablet and cash.

Recorder Michael Stephens told Richard Hefford after the 29-year-old admitted his role in the carjacking: “They were in a vulnerable situation.”

The  judge heard how Hefford donned a balaclava as he and his accomplice targeted the  couple at Aylestone Meadows in Leicester, the city’s Crown Court heard.

The car was found dumped in Leicester city centre half an hour later where blood on the steering wheel was matched to Hefford.

He was later arrested for robbing a Chinese restaurant and a shop.

The lout — already serving five years for those crimes — appeared in court via video link from jail.

He also admitted another robbery.

The judge imposed an additional five-year sentence concurrent to the stretch he was given in March.

It will have the effect of extending his time behind bars by seven months.

The judge told Hefford, of Eyres Monsell, Leicester: “I have to regard the robbery of the two people in the car as a serious offence.

“You broke the windows and threats were made to the couple that no doubt scared them.

“It was obviously a quite terrifying incident for them.”

The court heard Hefford had 31 other criminal offences on his record.
