Do trains run on Christmas Day?

OVER the festive period travelling to see relatives is the top of most Christmas lists.

So can you pop on a train to visit your loved ones? Here's what happens over the Christmas period.

Do trains run on Christmas Day?

Trains stop working from late Christmas Eve until early on Boxing Day.

Christmas Day is a bank holiday, with the rails shutting down to allow workers to spend time with their families.

If you are planning to travel over the festive period, it would be best to do so on Christmas Eve.

On Boxing Day, trains do not run either except for some airport transfer services.

When did trains stop running on Christmas Day?

Trains used to run a Sunday service on Christmas Day.

Back when many households did not have cars, rail was a popular way to get around on the big day.

The last national train service to run on Christmas Day was in 1964.

The reason behind the stoppage of service is explained by the Association of Train Operating Companies which says: ";After 1948, Christmas Day train services went into decline."

The number got even worse during the 1950s and the reason for it is that "cars were more accessible."

That is why they decided to give their staff a break and stop running trains on Christmas Day.

According to , by 1979, the only trains running on Christmas Day was a local service in Glasgow. The rest of the country was shut for the day.

Does TfL run on Christmas Day?

Transport for London followed the railway's lead and decided to close their stations on Christmas.

The last Tube to run on Christmas was in 1979 and from then, all London Underground operations stopped on the special holiday.

That means that buses, trams, underground and overground trains do not run.

However coach services, including and , are operating a limited service.

Can you get an Uber on Christmas Day?

Uber is still there to take people from one place to another on Christmas day.

They might charge at a higher rate than usual because they would be in high demand, considering that there are no other means of transportation unless you have your own car.

Despite this, they can still be cheaper than independent taxi companies and so are still a good option to get around with.

If you decide to share an Uber with someone else then that will only make it cheaper.
