A man was pronounced dead at the scene and not moved by paramedics.

The double-death drama happened on the A25 Reigate Road in Dorking, Surrey, shortly before 7pm on Friday evening.

It was understood that the van driver stopped at the scene but police have appealed for anyone who saw the vehicle being driven before the crash to contact them.

Local residents said later that the couple who died were believed to be a husband and wife and both were crossing the road on a corner when they were hit by the van.

The tragedy happened just a few yards from the popular Chef and Brewer-run Watermill Inn which is on the A25 Reigate Road.

One regular at the inn said today: "The place where it happened is unlit and it had just got dark. It is not the best place to cross that road.

"The van driver stopped at the scene and was very shaken up. He was walking around when I went out there. It seems that the couple were hit at speed and both were thrown some distance down the road by the impact.

"The husband died at the scene. I think they managed to resuscitate him once but he was very badly injured and eventually they couldn't save him. He was certified dead at the scene.

"His wife was airlifted by helicopter to London but apparently she died soon after she arrived, as well. We do not know the couple's names but I gather they lived in Dorking," she said.

"There was an off-duty doctor who was driving by and stopped to help. I think he managed to revive the gentleman but in the end he was beyond help. They were both quite elderly."

A spokesman for Surrey Police said today: "Officers are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision between a van and two pedestrians in Dorking.

"Two elderly pedestrians and a silver van were involved in the collision on the A25 Reigate Road near the junction of Pixham Lane.

"A man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A woman was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting, London, where she was sadly pronounced dead," said the spokesman.

"The road is currently closed while officers carry out an investigation of the scene – motorists are advised to take an alternative route.

"Officers are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or the movements of the silver van prior to the collision. Anybody who witnessed the collision or with any information is urged to call Surrey Police Collision Investigation Unit on 01483 639922 or the 101 non-emergency number, quoting reference, P16240428."
