Construction site worker dies after being injured by machinery at nuclear power station

A CONSTRUCTION worker has died after being injured by machinery at Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.

Police were scrambled to the site in Somerset at around 8.30am today after the horror unfolded.

Sadly the man couldn't be saved and died shortly after.

Police have now launched a probe alongside the Health and Safety Executive.

Work at the site has been shut down following the tragedy.

Avon and Somerset Police said: "Sadly, despite the efforts of the ambulance service, the man died a short time later.

"His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

"We're liaising with the Health and Safety Executive and our enquiries into the incident are ongoing."

Nigel Cann, delivery director at Hinkley Point C, said the circumstances will be investigated.

He said: "We are very sad to confirm that one of our team was involved in a fatal construction traffic incident this morning during planned work activities.

"The incident is being investigated by the police and the Health and Safety Executive, and we will co-operate fully with the authorities.

"Work at the site has been stood down and we are offering support to colleagues affected by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time."

Hinkley Point C was given the green light to be built by Theresa May in 2016 at an estimated cost of £18billion.

Its construction was delayed by the Covid pandemic and it now start operating in 2027 - costing an extra £3billion.

EDF Energy says Hinkley Point will provide electricity for around 6 million homes once complete.

There are currently six nuclear power plants in the UK, which provide about 16 per cent of the country’s electricity.
