'IT'S A SYMBOL OF FREEDOM'

‘Aleppo’s Statue of Liberty’ and stunning Twin Towers image among hard-hitting works by Syrian artist

Tammam Azzam has been using digital media and graphic art to get his message about Syria across since the uprising began

THIS hard-hitting picture of the Statue of Liberty made from the ruins of a bombed out building in Aleppo is just one of the stunning works made by Syrian artist Tammam Azzam.

The attention-grabbing image has been shared around social media in recent days after it was tweeted by American columnist Ian Bremmer.

Bremmer wrote: “Statue of Liberty made from bombed rubble of Aleppo, by Syrian artist Tammam Azzam. Devastating.”

It since emerged that the artist created the image electronically rather than building it out of actual rubble – but that doesn’t make it any less striking.

Azzam recently told : “The Statue of Liberty in New York does not represent US politics and I used it only as the symbol of freedom.

“The piece at the time was carrying a message of optimism despite all of the destruction in Syria…but that was a long time ago.”

Born in Damascus in 1980, Azzam turned to digital media and graphic art after the start of the Syrian uprising in 2011.

And the Statue of Liberty image is just one of many political pieces created by the artist over the course of the long-running conflict.

One haunting picture shows a ruined Syrian building floating on balloons out of the smoking hole in the side of one of the Twin Towers on 9/11.

Another shows a hand grenade made out of brightly coloured flowers, which Azzam captioned “Syrian Spring”.

And one banksy-esque graffiti-style piece shows the silhouette of a protester throwing a musical note at a pair of soldiers and an ISIS jihadi in a picture he titles “Demonstration”.

Azzam, who now lives in Dubai, has participated in numerous international art exhibitions around the world in recent years in locations across Europe, North America and Asia.

He also received an artist fellowship at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg Institute for Advanced Study in Delmonhost, Germany, last year.
