Who is Gary Johnson? Meet the US Presidential candidate who asked ‘What is Aleppo?’
IT'S easy to forget that the race to the White House is not just between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Libertarian Gary Johnson is among scores of other American parties and Independents running for president in the 2016 election.
The difference is, Johnson actually has a chance at becoming President of the United States.
So who is he, could he become president and what does his party stand for?
Who is Gary Johnson?
Gary Johnson is a US presidential election candidate, running for the Libertarian Party.
The 63-year-old is from Minot, North Dakota and is also the 29th Governor of New Mexico.
He is currently third in line to the presidency with just three per cent of the vote, falling behind Hillary Clinton with 49 per cent and Donald Trump with 44 per cent.
He was a Republican until 2011, switching his support before he ran for president in 2012, receiving 1.3million votes (0.99%).
But his campaign has been full of gaffes, revealing Johnson doesn't know as much as he should about foreign affairs. He went viral last month after asking "What is Aleppo?" in a TV interview when asked if elected what he would do about the war-torn Syrian city.
When asked to name a world leader he admired, he couldn't name a single one - instead resorting to "the former president of Mexico"...who he also couldn't remember the name of.
He also refused to name Kim Jong Un as North Korea's leader when asked, and couldn't work out who Harriet Tubman was - despite her being one of the USA's most influential figures in history who will appear on the new $20 bill.
Could Gary Johnson become President?
Despite the election appearing as a two-party battle, Gary Johnson actually has a chance of becoming President of the United States.
His influence over New Mexico could deadlock the presidency between Trump and Clinton.
There are 535 members of the US Congress and if Gary Johnson wins his state he will have secured five Electoral College votes towards Congress.
It would mean Hillary Clinton would have 267 votes and Trump 266 - but a total of 270 electoral votes are needed to cinch the election.
The final decision is then taken to the House of Representatives, who would consider the three candidates with the most Electoral College votes.
In theory, if he wins New Mexico he would make the top three and could be chosen as president by the House.
However, this is very unlikely - only two Presidential elections in the 19th century have been decided this way.
What is the Libertarian Party?
Gary Johnson is running for the Libertarian Party, who are the USA's third biggest party.
They have never won a seat in Congress, and at the moment have two seats in both State Upper Houses and State Lower Houses.
The Libertarian Party have some controversial policies, including abolishing any form of the welfare state.
They state on their website"We should eliminate the entire social welfare system. This includes eliminating food stamps, subsidised housing, and all the rest.
"Individuals who are unable to fully support themselves and their families through the job market must, once again, learn to rely on supportive family, church, community, or private charity to bridge the gap."
They also support the legalisation of all victimless crimes, including drugs, porn, prostitution, polygamy, gambling and removing restrictions on LGBT.
