RAIL BLUNDER

Rail bosses forced to replace panels on new £1billion train station because they’re too SHINY

Cabbies complained that the panels were distracting them

BUNGLING rail bosses have been forced to replace panels on a billion pound train station - because they are too SHINY.

The stainless steel panels at Birmingham New Street station are going to be dulled down after cabbies complained the sun shining off them was distracting.

People have also complained because the panels act as a mirror and reflect heat on to surrounding buildings.

Red-faced chiefs now have to change the panels and put a special coating on them at the £1 billion station.

Councillor Tahir Ali said: "Taxi drivers complained that the reflection was causing them issues when they were driving as they couldn't see properly.

"A coating will be put on the panel to prevent the sunlight reflecting on drivers."

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "The transformation of Birmingham New Street station continues to have a positive effect on the city centre and these small changes to certain sections of the cladding will ensure there is no negative impact on businesses or residents nearby.

"We will now plan the work to be completed as quickly and safely as possible while causing the least amount of disruption."

Birmingham City Council case officer David Wells added: "Whilst applying the dulling treatment to the facade panels is not ideal, I consider that in the two areas proposed it is the most effective and feasible treatment.

"I am satisfied the applicant has explored options to avoid the treatment of the facade panels.

"Furthermore, the proposed treatment of the panels would be the most effective and feasible when compared with other options, as well as the least disruptive.

"In addition, the applicant has applied the dulling treatment to several panels by the taxi pick up area to test the approach, which are considered to be acceptable and not unduly noticeable."

The station was opened by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh last November following the billion pound redevelopment.

Grand Central boasts a John Lewis store as well as several other shops and restaurants.

Birmingham New Street is the busiest railway station outside of London - handling more than 35 million passengers each year.
