Yesterday Rishi Sunak said that soldiers will drive ambulances and replace Border Force staff in the festive period. And strikers faced a backlash from veterans over the walkouts.

Tory MP Tobias Ellwood, a former Army captain, said unions “should be ashamed of forcing the mobilisation of regular and reserves who will now forgo spending precious time with their own families”.

Mr Sunak, visiting RAF Coningsby, Lincs, said the country owes military personnel an “enormous debt of gratitude” for stepping in.

Meanwhile, it emerged that ministers blocked a ten per cent pay rise for striking rail staff in a bid to save cash.

An eight per cent offer was rejected by unions this week.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said: “We have to be careful not to agree to pay demands that have the opposite of the intended effect because they lock in high inflation.”

Last night the Electoral Commission revealed Labour has accepted £15million in donations from striking unions since Sir Keir Starmer became leader.

He has refused to condemn the unions and said they have a right to strike.
