A source said: “It is becoming an embarrassment for the Navy that they have no female commandos.

“Bosses are thrilled that two women have signed up and are hopeful one, or both, will get through one of the toughest military inductions in the world.

“But they won’t be given special treatment.”

The two female recruits are expected to arrive in late January and will face exactly the same tests as the men.

The Royal Navy said: “All branches of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines are open to all regardless of gender.”
