JUST THE TICKET

I’m a war veteran who won the lottery after a cheeky move – it would’ve REALLY annoyed my wife if I didn’t hit jackpot

A WAR veteran scooped a lottery jackpot after buying a ticket despite his wife telling him not to.

John Ireland, from Idaho, US, won almost £80,000 - having spent only £8.

He said he had "a feeling" he would win so he decided to ignore his wife Olga's request to stop betting on the lottery and take the punt.

John told Idaho Lottery: ";My wife, Olga, didn’t want me to buy any more tickets.

"I just bought a Powerball and Weekly Grand at Fred Meyer’s, and she said that was my limit."

"The funny thing is, I never play $10 (£8) Cash Spot. Something inside of me just really felt like I should, so I gave the clerk the cash and Olga pressed the button for me."

More lottery news

Although she didn't want him to buy any more tickets, John said Olga helped him as while serving in Vietnam, he lost feeling in his hands and feet after being exposed to Agent Orange.

John said Olga brought him "good luck" as she pressed the button.

He added: "I think she was my good luck. No, I know she was my good luck. Always has been."

The lucky couple plan on donating some of their £78,617 ($94,471) windfall to their church and using some to pay off bills.

It comes after a mum who bagged a life-changing £19 million on the lottery insisted she won't quit her job.

The unnamed woman only purchased the winning Powerball ticket as a Christmas gift to herself.

But it turned into dream come true money when she became one of three winners to net a record-breaking £52 million jackpot.

The mum, from QueenslandAustralia, said: "I just jumped to the roof and screamed!

"The kids thought a cockroach was in the kitchen."
