JUNGLE KIDS

Another 1,500 migrant children are removed from the Jungle – as hundreds of others ‘head straight BACK to Calais in bid to reach Britain’

AROUND 1,500 migrant children are being removed from the Calais Jungle today - as hundreds of others return to Calais to resume their bid to get into Britain.

Unaccompanied youngsters are being moved to reception centres around France as Brit authorities decide whether they can live in the UK.

But many have already quit the centres to head back to Calais,

In one welcome centre, Meurthe-et-Moselle, only 21 of the 40 child migrants who arrived last Wednesday remained at the weekend.

Local council leader Mathieu Klein said: “19 young migrants want to leave as they still want to get to England via Calais where they say they have family and the language is more familiar to them.”

More than 70 buses have been deployed to remove the kids from Calais, with the first leaving at around 8.30am on Wednesday with 43 on board.

Three buses carried an unaccompanied group of boys - mostly teens - out of the camp on Wednesday morning.

More than 5,000 adult migrants were moved out of Calais last week - but it is unclear where the 1,500 unaccompanied children will go now the Jungle has been shut down.

The minors have been housed temporarily in converted shipping containers in Calais after demolition teams tore down the Jungle, a ramshackle camp of shacks and tents.

Migrants from the Middle East and Africa moved there in the hope of crossing the Channel to Britain, where many claim to have relatives.

French President Francois Hollande said this week children would be transferred within days to "dedicated centres", where British officials can study whether they have the right to UK asylum.

Mr Hollande said others would be put under the care of French child welfare services.

Thousands of other migrants have already been relocated across France.

Diplomatic tensions between London and Paris have intensified in recent days after Mr Hollande urged Prime Minister Theresa May to accept Britain's share of responsibility for the minors.

British officials called on France to take better care of them.
