A 13-YEAR-OLD was rushed to hospital after being stabbed "with a compass" outside a Birmingham school.

The youngster suffered a shoulder injury following the attack near Hamstead Hall Academy in Craythorne Avenue, Handsworth Wood.

The attack took place at around 3.45pm on Tuesday, minutes after pupils finished lessons for the day.

A second boy was arrested on suspicion of wounding and was helping West Midlands Police officers with their enquiries into the “isolated incident”.

Police were conducting what the force called “reassurance patrols” and were working with the school to establish what happened.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Officers were called to an isolated incident involving two students outside Hamstead Hall School at 3.45pm following reports of a boy suffering a stab injury to his shoulder.

“The boy has been taken to hospital, the injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

“Another boy has been arrested on suspicion of wounding and is currently helping with enquiries.

“Local officers are carrying out reassurance patrols and are working with the school to establish what happened.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called to Craythorne Avenue, Handworth Wood, at 3.37pm where we treated a boy for injuries to his shoulder blade.

“West Midlands Police were also in attendance.

“He was taken to Sandwell Hospital, but his injuries were not thought to be serious.

“It is suspected that he was stabbed with a compass, though this is unconfirmed at this stage.”
